Being a successful (un)limited leader
Context:
X is a Sr manager with one of the top IT company and has been successful in delivering products/solutions as per the plan keeping customer a priority.
With his current employment, he has been having few hard situations and there are escalation on his communication style, while everyone really appreciate with X is bringing to the table, the communication style is attracting more attention.
X thinks acknowledges and is looking to get coached on addressing the communication style problem.
Goal:
To be highly productive and make effective communication (so that others do not get affected negatively).
How do you measure the success?
- Leading highly productive team that innovates and finds no limitations for their work.
- No escalations on the communication style.
- Teams with satisfaction.
What is causing?
Probably different goals by different teams. When teams work for their own team goal than a collective goal(s), that causes conflict and the communication style issues are a manifestation of something going beyond threshold limits.
Can we be have teams with different goals and still achieve goal?
- Achieving partial goals is possible, no issues on communication style can be addressed but you may need to downgrade his startup mind set. Plan something and deliver that and limit with it. Other teams will do their own goal and path.
- Or it is possible that the teams goals are aligned such a way that they are in synergy, when this happens this is effectively one goal.
Are your team goals superior than other team goals?
No, this perspective is wrong. We should not be having this perception. The conflict of not having right set of goals should not be viewed as friction between goals of different teams. It rather a misaligned set of goals across team and the higher level manager, ideally should take responsibility of setting a synchronized set of goals across teams.
Resolution
Live life with controlled challenges. Uncontrolled or beyond control situations, leave it to manager to deal with it.
Reduce the impact of the problems at work place with other teams or managers etc by focussing on the work at hand, work with team, make best out of the work, do in best way, innovate, make solutions, make sure team is happy.
The goal is to make at least 85% of what fills the mind to be the stuff that can be controlled, managed by you and there will be 15% that is beyond control, you may know its really bad but making sure the self and the team do not get affected negatively is important.
Make the best of what you have!, There is no perfect world.
